There are so many reason I didn't finish this. I could talk about the absolutely infuriating POV switches, sometimes within a paragraph. I could talk about how everything felt like a rehash of the same clichés and how the only original thing about it was smashing them all together into one story. I could talk about how directionless it felt. But the biggest thing was how absolutely gleeful the author seemed to be when describing horrible things being done to people. I read dark books, it is a huge draw for me normally to wallow in the shadows of the human psyche; so when I say it felt like this crossed a line, and did so undeservedly, I really mean it.

I really enjoyed this book. it took reading the second one however to get to this point. the book is a bit frenetic and I felt like there were many questions or history that wasn't addressed. a lot of this was resolved in the second book and the two joined together nicely. wish there was a third so I can find out where these people go next and how they come together again.

Great job of world-building. Strong, complex characters. I look forward to reading/listening to more of this series of books.

A wild ride, unexpectedly delightful at every turn. This was definitely my favorite book of the year.

It's such an amalgamation that, if it were not as good as it was, you'd laugh.

It's a Weird Wild West tale, with all the supernatural come out to play in the town of Golgotha. And I mean ALL. There's so many secrets, weird happenings and crazy characters in the town that it blows right past the border of ridiculous.

And yet, it all comes together. Surprisingly, amazingly so. All the angels and demons and ancient magic eyes and tarot cards and unkillable sheriffs and shapeshifting deputies and Mormon relics of power and Elder Gods and assassin pirates and bodies in jars and whatever it is in that circle of salt and and and and and...

Quite the enjoyable book.

Glad I finished this one, but....never really got into it. The character I was most interested in (the one the book opens with) is only focal about half the time. Many of the other characters are omnipotent in ways that make little sense while being vulnerable in ways that make less sense. I may give another Belcher book a go - in a year or three.
