These two novellas bookend the previous story, Liquor, in which Rickey and G-man open their own restaurant in New Orleans.

In the first novella, we get to experience how John (Rickey) and Gary (G-man), inseparable best friends since childhood, first discover and act upon their feelings for each other as teenagers. Their parents, especially Gary's devoutly Catholic mother, concoct a plan to keep the two apart in hopes that it's just a phase. They arrange tuition for Rickey, a budding chef, to attend the Culinary Institute of America in New York, and ambitious Rickey can't refuse.

The second novella takes place a decade and a half later. Liquor has been invited to provide a duck-centered menu for a banquet of 300 for a duck hunting organization, with the guest of honor being Rickey's favorite football player, retired from the Saints. In his usual obsessive fashion, Rickey stresses about the event in an effort to make it perfect.

I am loving these Rickey and G-man stories. Brite writes these characters with so much heart and humor. They are so good together, and have already become one of my all time favorite fictional couples. The New Orleans atmosphere and the restaurant kitchen scene feel so authentic (due to Brite's personal experience) and there are some really funny moments - a few truly laugh out loud. Highly recommended if you're looking for a sweet, funny love story.
