Five stars mainly because Kaiju named after Twilight characters is nothing but top tier.

Fast, easy to read, absorbing plot and characters. Fun and fluffy and light and it just felt like the author had a good time while writing it, which is always a lovely feeling because it makes you feel good to read it. The nerdery was high and some of the science exposition was a little tiny bit clunky but the world building and the wonder of that more than made up for it. Not a book to change the world but well worth reading escapism - the casual mentions to COVID and the vaccine curing people completely read like the pure fantasy that it was, which I'm obviously down for because the reality was depressing and boring and we all had to live through it already. This book made me chuckle a couple of times.

The author is right in his blurb at the end - it is a pop song of a book. But hugely enjoyable if not ever so slightly predictable. Lots of fun

This was a really fun and light story full of fun character interactions and funky Kaijus.
Was it necessarily a good book? I am not sure but it's perfect for getting you out of a reading slump while entertaining the hell out of you.
I loved the cast, some of the support characters lacked some distinct features tho and while their banter felt a bit like Joss Whedon in the early 2000s I am a big Buffy and Firefly Fan so there is that.
The plot is not really around for most of the book and when it comes around it's very straight forward and predictable. The feeling is workplace sitcom but the workplace is a science station in an alternate reality populated by Kaijus. If you like books that are more based around vibes you'll enyoy this one more than say someone who loves a tight, gripping Sci-Fi plot. I wouldn't call it cozy Sci-Fi per se (the world is quite hostile) but it's very light Sci-Fi.
The writing style is ok. I would have preferred it a bit more whitty but it get's the job done. What I didn't enjoy were all the pop-culture references made. But that's just a lil pet peeve of mine.
Overall the book does what it set out to do: be a fun, light novel about scientists, Kaijus and a dude who lifts things. So would I rate it higher than 3.5 stars? Probably not. Will I still recommend it? Sure, it was very entertaining after all.

cw: c19 pandemic mentions, violence, some medical content, death, animal cruelty, war & nuclear bombings mentioned, alcohol use
how was this so much fun? i laughed so much and absolutely loved each character in their own ways including their interactions with each other.
also yay for trans & queer characters! you don't get the exact info about charlie, but so many of the rest of the characters are diverse & you love to see it. 🩷
