This was definitely, as the author put it, a book that's "meant to be light and catchy". It was a fun romp through a world where Godzilla-like creatures were real, only this was less about the traditional Godzilla-esque battle-for-the-world thing and more of a these are living creatures and therefore need to be protected from both themselves and us. It felt very much like a story centred around world-building, with some plot that didn't really show itself until about halfway through. My main disappointment was the lack of description; I didn't know what the kaiju looked like or any of the characters. A little something more on that end would have been nice. Still, I enjoyed the snark and the generous amount of banter going on; also, Satie is definitely my favourite character for that one scene alone and I am so glad he showed up as much as he did.

Soft dnf. The first chunk is a bit slow and it's a bit hard to get past it. I'll give it another try another time.

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi is a fun ride. It takes place at the start of the pandemic. Jamie has been fired from his tech job and is working as a food delivery driver when he runs into an old friend, Tom. Tom offers Jamie an opportunity with an “animal rights organization” during their next field visit. What Jamie doesn’t know is that this job takes him to an alternate dimension where Godzilla-like animals called Kaiju roam the planet. They are tasked with keeping the Kaiju safe and from crossing over to our Earth, where they essentially become nuclear bombs. This story is sarcastic and funny and kept me entertained. I enjoyed Jamie and his brand of humor while he gets to know this world. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by Wil Wheaton, who made the experience even more fun. 3/5 stars.
