Nota: 4.5 ⭐

This is the kind of book that I would have liked to read during the pandemic. Something that would have gotten me away from the fact that I was spending a good chunk of my year inside and bored out of my mind. This book was both hilarious and the kind of lighthearted fun that I didn't know I needed. Like normally for a book that deals with kaijus I'm gonna hoping to get exactly that- alot of kaijus- but instead i found myself really loving the connection and chemistry between Jamie and their group of friends. Each of them were sassy and fun in their own little way and it really carried the book for me and made me enjoy it a lot more than I thought I would.
That being said, Scalzi is definitely an author I need to read more of.

Super fun read with great dialogue that made me laugh out loud. Was it a bit predictable? Sure, but like the afterword said, sometimes you need something easy and light.

Super well written and easy to get sucked into. It is easy to connect and feel for the main character with his struggles during the pandemic (losing his job and security like a ton of people). However, it takes a really unique turn where the world/world-building in junction to our dimension is tied together through science. While the "subject" is a fantasy creature, John Scalzi shows all sides of humans in the "Anthropocene". From people being driven by selfish desires and greed to people wanting to see and do the best, they can every day.
Also the social commentary is just... *chefs kiss*.

There's a non binary character in the book that is not there about their non binarity but just to be an awesome physicist and be brave and be an amazing friend. I loved it.
