Love Alameda's mix of science fiction and suspense, and her strong female characters are always people I want to hang out with and/or be when I grow up.

YA sci fi horror with a smidge of (non annoying and just right in terms of how much time they spent on it) teen romance.
Quick paced and filled with snark the protagonists Laura and Tuck are likable.
Laura is from a family of ship raiders. Tuck has been asleep for hundreds of years. He awakens to a nightmare on the ship he is on. The John Muir. Laura's ship crashes into Tucks. From there on is a race to save everyone while dodging monsters with a traitors in their midsts.
3.5 stars. It's entertaining and readable.

I really enjoyed the first 80% of this book, but it got a little rushed at the end and I felt like I didn’t get some of the answers I was looking for. I have been wanting to read a scary book for a while now, oddly, since I’m not a big horror fan. The description of this one was hard to resist; it sounded like an episode of Doctor Who and I was ON BOARD. I thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of the monsters and Laura’s subjugator made my skin crawl. I am a sucker for setting, and I loved the setting of this one: Yosemite National Park, preserved on a spaceship crawling with monsters in the depths of space. Unfortunately I felt like not enough was done with the setting... we spend about two pages in the park itself, and while I loved the spaceship portion, I did wish there was more balance between nature and full sci-fi. And the rules of the world started to unravel near the end, the given explanation for the monsters no longer made sense to me. I also didn’t enjoy Tuck as a character, he seemed like kind of a jerk and I was often annoyed by him. Overall though, it was a heart-pounding read with a delightful premise that I’ll be thinking about for some time to come.

Kind of Tomb Raider meets Aliens. It's lots of fun, but the bad guys are just so evil that it verges on comical. I expected them to start rubbing their hands together and letting out a maniacal laugh at any moment. Even still, I'd probably pick up any potential sequels.
