Another book that was nominated for the Blue Hen Award. This book was a cute story, but I am going to be honest. I wasn't so much a fan of the book. It was cute and a good way to look at how school can be perceived through a dog's eyes (kind of), but the flow of the book just seemed off to me. I found myself not liking the overall prose of the story, but I can see how it might appeal to someone in 2nd or 3rd grade. As an adult, it didn't really click with me, but not every book will.
This book was a little bit of a slow starter for me, perhaps because I'm an adult, but once it got moving, it was a really fun read. I loved Waldo and Sassy. I loved Stewart's complete lack of shock at seeing his dogs in a trench coat, at school, talking. I loved the dogs' focus on all things meat and squirrel. I loved the affectionate obliviousness of Stewart's parents. I loved Bax the Bully. I loved Mrs. Twohey's over-the-top super-teacher-ness.
I think this book will get very popular in my library after one or two kids read it and spread the word.

The audiobook made this at least bearable, but it's pretty silly otherwise. Not my cup of tea.
If you judge this book by its cover or its title, you won't be disappointed. Surprisingly, the book manages to be funny and remain funny throughout its entirety - truly an impressive feat in a children's book.
I think this will be a popular title among younger readers.
