This being an autobiography being a self-portrait of the author, it’s hard for me to rate this book without my feelings of the subject biasing me.

Honestly, listening to this book it made me like Ebert less and less. I didn’t care for the amount of time he spent talking about his sexual interests, women’s breasts, and his association with snuff films. Also, nothing he wrote particularly convinced me of his qualifications or merits to be a film critic. He seemed rather pompous in his opinions of himself and his thoughts. As an amateur film maker, I did not feel I came away with any deep thoughts or insights into the craft I was hoping for, and over all disappointed. In fact, I was left wondering why Ebert was thought of in such high esteem in the film community.

As a former high school news paper editor, it was entertaining and interesting to hear Ebert’s school and university newspaper experiences, but beyond that I regularly found this book somewhat self-indulgent and gross.

Again, my feelings of the individual I gain from the book are so interwoven with my experience of listening to the boom, that it is hard for me to judge the book only on quality, but some of his choices on restate usage, I found gross and would not recommend this book over all.
