“for you, a thousand times over.”

khaled hosseini weaves life, magic, pain and love into his novels like no other writer ever has or ever will.

‘For you, a thousand times over’. I’ve literally stained this book with my tears from weeping so profusely. Hosseini has such a gift for storytelling. This was almost impossible to stomach at times but yet such a gripping and moving story that will remain with me for a very long time.

This book left a mark on my soul. Read it years ago and still the graphic nature of the prose gripped me, an overwhelming read.

Very difficult to like the main character for the majority of the book. Lots of tragedy, and just when it seems to be getting better, everything gets worse. It’s reflective of life, and there’s no “perfectly happy” ending.

Ok so here are my thoughts:
The book definitely holds immense emotional power. The climaxes feel like Clint Eastwood's action movies but the development of the story is certainly top notch. Maybe the book just serves to satisfy western readers and their beliefs about Afghanistan. As someone who only grew up in a middle class family, the author is probably unable to provide an insider's look to the harsh realities even though it might seem to an outsider as if it's revealing a lot. But even so, the book captures a good array of themes.
