This is a story about Shirley Falls and the people that live there. Amy and Isabelle, a daughter and mother, are our main characters, but we also dip in and out of the lives of the other inhabitants of this small Maine town.

On the surface, we follow Amy as she falls into infatuation with her teacher and how Isabelle handles it when she discovers her daughter’s inappropriate relationship. However, it’s also about the secrets that people keep in order to protect themselves from the judgment of others. It’s also about how history can repeat itself, even between a mother and a daughter.

Elizabeth Strout’s writing isn’t overly poetic or overly simple. But there is a deep understanding of human behavior and human relationships, and the wisdom there is simple. In the end, I teared up multiple times while reading this book.

I think I need to read everything this author has written. I love her understated but beautiful writing style that somehow observes and conveys EVERYTHING about her characters.
