Great read

Looking forward to the next installment ,generations of great characters and written at a wonderful pace some great on liners too .

Quite a complex book. I kept changing my mind about the main theme. Space flight, clones, alien structures, AI, etc. The sequel is available but I'll take a break before I read it.

At first I was a little underwhelmed with this, but the vignettes did get better and more interesting. Not a bad little read at all.

First book finished in 2018! I started this a couple of days ago, and I spent most of yesterday reading it. What is most interesting to me is that this book is about exploration and about how people change, so really the only constant character is the AI-though it is not from their perspective. This story is told over generations, as a ship of clones makes its way to a faraway star and then back to earth. The way that civilization shifts and how people feel about earth and purpose, and how earth changes while they are gone, is all a part of this story. It is about relationships and purpose, and I think what made it so interesting was that it was more about a long term shift shown through this vignettes of each generation. Really interesting, and a good first read for 2018.

Simultaneously a great book and a book that doesn’t really work for me.

Silly at times, but fascinating concepts. Looking forward to reading book 2.
adventurous emotional hopeful medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Such a good book! The writing was superb, the characters were well developed and interesting and the actual story was great. A little bit of big dumb object meets pseudo-first contact meets interstellar travel. Highly recommended.

4.5 stars. Ireally enjoyed the format, described as vignettes. That way, the whole mission over a long period of time can be shown as different circumstances affect the generations. Only downside was the jarring transitions- jarring only because I became involved with the characters of one set piece and we lef them in media res the way we began with them.

Like someone locked Becky Chambers in a meth lab.
