I can't enter a bookstore without buying a book. However, when visiting Rotterdam last summer I at least tried to limit myself. One book per bookstore. Eventually I of course did mess up and got two books from Donner, but it could have been much and much worse. One of the books I got from Donner was this book. I read the summary and the book seemed to scream my name and it was impossible to not buy. Like with loads of other books though, it took me a long time before I started reading.

The beginning of this book was a little overwhelming at times. Although this book is a romance at its heart, focussing on two people slowly falling in love despite the circumstances, a lot of thought has gone into the world building, the mythology, the magic and the history of Okrith. Normally I don't mind unknown words and whatever, but in this case there were moments I felt like the author really had to slow down a little with giving us more background information.

However, once the world, its people, its politics, its magic and its history became more and more familiar I started to enjoy the story more and more. That's mostly because with us having all the needed information there was a little more room for emotions. There was more room for the characters to feel and doubt and grow and learn. And there was more time for inner monologues giving us a better idea of who our heroine actually is.

I also started to like, and even love, these characters more and more. I liked the way the interacted, how they talked, how there was an instant attraction from the start, but how they also had to work for this relationship to work. I also really liked how both their personal journeys and emotional stories were dealt with in one action packed and amazing finale. I'm therefore really excited to read all the other books in this series as soon as possible! I can't wait to meet the other couples!

Loved the diverse characters but it wasn’t enough to make up for the boring internal dialog and weak plot.

The pace of this book was good! It’s well written but I found it to be a little too predictable for my taste. It also felt a little too «insta-love » which is a trope I’m not too keen about. I’m really interested to see where book two takes us!

I was enjoying this until
Remy and Hale have the Fated mates revelation and there is not a sentence that goes by without mentioning being 'Fated'.
It had been pretty readable until this and I enjoyed the plot, but this plus the fact I knew the series didn't follow the same central characters made me decide to cut my losses.

Originally I was going to rate this 4 stars because while the writing was a bit immature/rough at times, it was overall pretty entertaining, but there were several decisions towards the end of the book that had me irate

This book had me in the first half. Ended up being super disappointed because it was super cliche and unoriginal. I'm usually okay with variations of a similar plot if it's delivered in a way that doesn't feel forced. It felt like it was trying too hard to be this amazing series but it lacked something vital. The character interactions were just awful and it made me not care about them at all. This book became super hard to get through and made me realize I would rather read so many other things.
