There was a lot of gushing about Wesley and Maybell on Romance Twitter in the lead up to its pub and after reading it I can see why because I just wanted to hug this when it was over.
When we meet Maybell, she's a pushover that's been gaslit by her "best friend" who's the manager's daughter at the resort where she worked for 10 years as a housekeeper before being promoted to co-event-coordinator so she'd keep quiet about the gaslighting. This is not the kind of character I want to spend time with so I was glad to see how she grew over time. Wesley is a grumpy-ass groundskeeper who's the co-inheritor of her great-aunt's house in the Smokie Mountains. They clash immediately but they come together on a treasure hunt on the grounds because her GA Violet left a few wishes for to complete for her in her grand scheme - surprise! - of matchmaking from the grave.
As the two get to know each other, we find out that the reason why Wesley's so rude to everyone is because he has debilitating social anxiety - so bad that he can't date because dating requires dining in restos and that triggers his fear of not being able to leave, which is why he's still a virgin at 30yo(!) He prefers communicating in writing because it soothes his anxiety. Their first date is adorable - he brings her imaginary coffee shop AU to life and it's super-swoony. The ending was a surprise, but so sweet. They were on the plane to Scotland to fulfill Wesley's dream of maybe seeing Loch Ness but his anxiety is so terrible that he ends up getting off the plane and Maybell goes by herself, and while she's there, she gives him the running commentary of everything that she sees and it made me sad for a bit that this might be their life together because of his anxiety but the end! He shows up afterall because he has the confidence that Maybell loves him! They talk about it over the phone and it's so lovely. This was just so, so good.
