Twice Shy hit a little too close to home. Maybell Parish is essentially me some few months ago. Head always up in the clouds? Check. Making up fake scenarios? Check. Wearing my heart on my sleeves? Check. Getting smacked upside-down by the universe for said naivete? You know it!

So, I can’t really write anything objective about this book. It’s sweet. It’s hopeful. It made me squirm all the way from start to finish cause it felt like a one-way route to heartbreak. I am an escapist. I read books to forget reality. This book was specifically about some things I've been trying very, very hard to not think about. Not ideal. At all.

I guess the grumpy one is soft for the sunshine one trope is not for me anymore. Sorry this isn’t much of a review. I am incapable of writing one at present.

The way Sarah Hogle wrote Wesley was absolutely amazing. I really started with hating his character at first and then he slowly became a lovable hero. I didn't even know how or when my feelings for Wesley changed.

Unfortunately, the amount of quirkiness the heroine and the story had made the book mediocre for me. The over the top and somewhat inconsistent quirky heroine, the cafe au, the treasure hunt that didn't go anywhere, the boring renovation scenes were too much for me.

That being said, I think my main problem was the heroine. I could have dealt with everything else if I could understand her character. I thought I loved over the top sunshine girls in books but Maybell was too over the top for me to really understand. I didn't even know what she was saying or feeling half the time.

For Wesley's character development and the cute scenes, I'm giving this 3 stars. Overall, it was an enjoyable read with some cringey scenes.
