Kezi is one of the good ones. She is a young black woman speaking out against racism. On her way to her first protest, she gets arrested. And is listed as dead after a fires at the police station. We get to see multiple perspectives of the arrest and the days leading up to that. Important message of acceptance resonates throughout.

This was a DNF at 30% for me. The message in this book is important, it has great diversity and representation. However, I found it written in a poetic style, which I don’t jive with and I found it overwritten and quite boring. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the free preview in exchange for an honest review.

WOW. I had no idea what this was going to be about. I just checked it out from the library because I thought the cover looked nice.
I just assumed that this was going to be like most YA contemporaries I’ve read (which isn’t a bad thing! that’s my favorite genre!) but this took more turns than I was ever expecting. I also LOVED the characters and the emphasis on family relationships. Don’t miss this book!
Side note: I really appreciated the author’s note too. Every page of this book was great.

WOW. THAT ENDING. I read this during a minor reading slump so it took me a while and it felt like it dragged for so long, but I refused to DNF it because I heard the twist is really good, and I'm SO glad I listened to my gut because it was definitely worth the struggle. I learned a ton about Black History, and I appreciated all the important discussions about the world's injustices towards People Of Color, as well as the light this book sheds to having a presence on the internet. It definitely made me want to be more aware and cautious about what I share on social media. The twist and the ending in general are phenomenal, and I was very impressed by the way this story was executed.
