It took me a while to decide what to make of this book. The clever writing and extensive vocabulary came rife with cliches and contradicting gender roles. Besides that the storyline came to a creeping crawl at times, the fantastical elements seemed half-baked at best. However with the one epic fantasy battle to end all religions theme that came to pass, I have the somewhat half-hearted assumption that the source of all my misgivings, were indeed purposeful.

RIP Salman Rushdie. The strongest voice I've read in ages; it's the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine go down.
Excellently written but ask me to tell you what it was about & I couldn't really tell you!
Amazing story and use of language. Also very satisfying as soon as you're finished, but reading it can be extremely tiring.
I feel like this could have been about 100 pages shorter if the writing had been less beautiful for the sake of being beautiful.
I readily confess to a fatal weakness for magical realism, but Rushdie's latest is more magic and precious little realism. It is an entertaining bit of frissante but, ultimately, fails to rise to the level of some of his earlier and more masterful works. The characters are unidimensional and the narrative arc as banal as it is predictable. This is confection - enjoyable in the moment but quickly forgotten.
Strange beautiful music...
Like many of his previous books, it's more about form than substance - I loved the rhythm, cadence, style, choice of words...having said that - there is some disturbing substance to it as well...
