Amazing writing - vivid and evocative.

Love the realistic portrayal of how women are perceived in this world. I love that Patroclus grows in his opinions on women and people too. Contrasted with Achilles and his views because he can only be focused on himself.

I think maybe a bit of pacing inconsistencies at the start of the war… partly felt rushed and partly felt weeded out a bit.

More character distinction would’ve been good, but I’m being really picky now.

The last chapter is amazing. Many tears fell. Amazing book and fleshed out story of a classic myth.

I feel the 1984 pull to the book now. Beautiful and I loved it. I cried a lot in my final sitting of the read.

I've always been invested in Greek myths so I really enjoyed this book and especially the take it has on the classics. You get an insight to queer love in the Greek myth realm so it's adventurous and really emotional for me at times. I connected to the main characters very well. I love the pacing and the writing style too, it captured my attention flawlessly as someone who has a hard time paying attention. I really recommend this if you're looking to hit a lot of boxes with this book it has everything I believe that makes it so intriguing.

⚰️
I think it takes a lot for a book to make me cry, and I thought that this wouldn’t… and of course I start balling in the last 10 pages. This was just beautifully written and scratched the itch of wanting a good Iliad interpretation (looking at you Troy). Never thought I would actually cry over characters from the Iliad and yet here I am. Just… ugh. I can see how this wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but I love detailed books, deep emotions, and mythological retellings.

I was so excited to read this book after hearing such rave reviews and that tissues are required for this one. Definitely well-written and such an interesting dive into these mythological greek characters, but the world building felt inconsistent with the way the gods play a role in the story and once the battle of troy began the number of "time jumps" really takes you out of the story waiting for the "big thing" to happen. I did really enjoy the first half of the book and I was sold on the characters and really interested in their story, but it was difficult to watch the characters change and see the fates play out. Still pondering the story and my review, but I'm glad to have read it!

Excuse me while I cry for the next 100 years. I had trouble putting this book down once I started reading it. This is now one of my favorite books of all time.

i could read this book a thousand times and find something new each time. the writing is beautiful and melodious. the story gut wrenching and sweetly beautiful.

patroclus, my love, you will always be remembered as a true hero. the same samwise gamgee of the trojan war.
he really was the best of the myrmidons
i love that boy so much. he was so brave, so kind, so smart, so sweet, so moral & loving. his character development was stunning, i loved seeing him grow in confidence.

the foreshadowing reminded me of my memories of the story, but i still broke when patroclus died and achilles fell

i love all the symbolism in this book and i would love to study this text like we did at school. there’s so much depth.
i love that achilles feet were described as this beautiful wonderful thing, foreshadowing his heel. but then it wasn’t an arrow through his heel. as apollo said “he’s a man, not a god”. thinking he was a god is what was the death of patroclus and then him in turn. without achilles hubris and butthurt ego, patroclus wouldn’t have done what he did. i also found it interesting how patroclus suffered the same inflated confidence and sense of invincibility when he adorned achilles’ armour - as if the myth of achilles is what corrupts.

i actually love odysseus’ character. i’ve always loved his story and i could tell straight away it was him from how he spoke. defo a top favourite character.

and the end??? my heart absolutely broke. Thetis was traumatised and it was easier to hate humans than other gods. easier to punish patroclus. but she saw her mistakes and she gave patroclus and achilles their eternity. it was such a nice touch

last but not least, i had to dedicate one of my tabs for the commentary on the misogyny in ancient greece. i love how well it was portrayed and how we saw its impact on even the strongest of men. in a story that focuses so heavily on men, i think it was a really important layer to add.
