The writing style did not work for me at all. I thought it was a cute idea but did not carry over in execution.

Clever. Cute. And utterly appalling. To the point of being triggering. The conceit of this book is that a kid to a lame birthday book and wrote all over to turn it into a completely different book in which he was the hero. It was readable and kind of funny. And yes making a story your own is a good idea. But reading every destroyed just felt bad. But it was funny. So a 1 star and a 5 star kind of averages out. But I wouldn't want this book around.

I can imagine how many kids have rewritten story books. Crossing out certain words and putting more exciting stories in their books. Originally it is a birthday Bunny is celebrating but crossing out "birthday" and inserting "battle" the story becomes the kind of story that has been acted out in backyards of many kids. An excellent book.

I don't know man. It's clever but it's a lot of work to read the text and subtext. I'm sure a lot of kids will enjoy it but I just didn't like it as much by other books by the authors.

Imagine that you took a vanilla story and added some unique elements. Suddenly a birthday bunny becomes a battle bunny set on destroying the world. Follow along as you read the story Alex has created by changing words and illustrations in the book.

Love the concept of taking a traditional book and remixing it to be more interesting. I've been looking into remixing works in the classroom for a while now, and this title fits perfectly. Battle Bunny reads like an old-school Golden Book, but has been remixed by what appears to be a young boy -- making this an excellent choice for any boy you know that is struggling as a reader or a writer. This is such a great concept and in Battle Bunny it has been carried out extremely well. A must read and will be a go-to for me with my boys that have their walls up when it comes to reading and writing.

When you put two comical authors together like Jon Scieszka and Mac Barnett, you know you're going to be laughing out loud!
Battle Bunny is the story of "Birthday Bunny" with some "changes" made to it by the "author", Alex. Apparently the story of "Birthday Bunny" was not dangerous enough for Alex so he made some alterations. "Birthday Bunny" becomes "Battle Bunny" and instead of "hopping" through the forest he is "chopping" through the woods. Not only does Alex change the words of the story, he also "embellishes" the illustrations! I think my favorite transformation is the Badger character. He becomes, "El Tejon, the greatest wrestler" and Alex gives him a WWF belt!
My suggestion is to try and read the "Birthday Bunny" story on each page, and then read the "Battle Bunny" changes. It makes for one funny read. You can discuss with your child/student(s) how you can always go back and "edit" a story!
Great additions to the story, "Alex"!

Hilarious and ingenious! So glad I finally read this! Sure, it's a but violent, but no more so than the YA novels with battles or video games NY students are exposed to, and it's done in a humorous/ridiculous way. Can't wait to share with students. Would love to have them do their own versions.
