Though not horrible, not one of my favorite King books. It started off like another Mr. Harrigan’s Phone and then took a long time being that — being setup — before shifting gears completely and finally becoming the actual “fairy tale”. By then I was ready for it to into high gear and become a story full of various adventures in this new world, and it was set up to be that, but instead one goal was quickly achieved and then it ground to a halt and became a meaty chunk of not-lot-of-variety-while-we’re-stuck-in-one-place (and a-whole-helluva-lot of King writing Charlie writing “that’s not what he said but that’s what I heard” — man alive, did that get old!) before a climax that had some Lovecraftian elements, which I appreciated, but was ultimately underwhelming. Fairy tales are supposed to be shorter, whimsical little moral-of-the-story pieces, but this was just too long-winded; it overstayed it’s welcome and could have easily had some fat trimmed.
DNF at 41% This book was just way too slow for me. lol
A truly exceptional book by my all-time favorite author.

This was my first modern Stephen King novel, and I have to say, it really feels like stepping into a dark, twisted fairy tale. 🖤🕯️ You don’t need to have read any of his other works to enjoy it (though he does drop a few fun references to horror, pop culture, and even his own stories along the way).
The first part is slow. You’re mainly getting to know Charlie, the 17-year-old MC, his world, and most importantly… 𝙍𝙖𝙙𝙖𝙧, the goodest girl ever. Honestly, I didn’t care much for the “real world” characters, but my heart was 100% with Radar and later the Otherworld. She’s the backbone of the story and the reason I couldn’t stop turning pages. I was constantly worried something might happen to her.
Then, 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱. 💥 The story shifts into full-on fairy-tale horror mode, packed with references to well-known stories (Jack and the Beanstalk fans, you’ll love it 🌱), twisted folklore, and classic King-style darkness.
And then there is Charlie… He’s supposed to be 17, but often sounds like a middle-aged man with all his cultural references. Every now and then, his thoughts on sports reminded me of his age, but mostly he felt older. Sometimes I wish he wouldn’t point out every reference though. It would’ve been nice to discover a few of those fairy-tale and horror nods on my own. 🕵️♀️
The ending? Satisfying. I liked where King left things.

Perfect for 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗺𝗻 𝘃𝗶𝗯𝗲𝘀 🍂 Moody, strange, and a little unsettling.
Just don’t go in asking 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘰𝘳 𝘸𝘩𝘺 things happen… it’s a fairy tale, and that’s the point. 😅
I was in the right mood for it, and I really enjoyed the ride. 🖤

Das war mein erstes modernes Stephen-King-Buch, und ich muss sagen, es fühlt sich wirklich an wie ein düsteres, verdrehtes Märchen. 🖤🕯️ Man muss keine seiner anderen Werke gelesen haben, um es zu genießen (obwohl er ein paar spaßige Anspielungen auf Horror, Popkultur und sogar seine eigenen Geschichten einbaut).
Der erste Teil ist eher langsam. Man lernt vor allem Charlie kennen, den 17-jährigen Hauptcharakter, seine Welt und vor allem … 𝙍𝙖𝙙𝙖𝙧, das allerbeste Mädchen überhaupt. 🐾 Ehrlich gesagt interessierten mich die „realen“ Charaktere kaum, aber mein Herz war zu 100 % bei Radar und später in der Anderswelt. Sie ist das Rückgrat der Geschichte und der Grund, warum ich einfach nicht aufhören konnte zu lesen. Ich war ständig besorgt, dass ihr etwas passieren könnte.
Dann geht 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘀 drunter und drüber. 💥 Die Geschichte schwenkt in den vollen Märchen-Horror-Modus, vollgepackt mit Anspielungen auf bekannte Geschichten (Jack und die Bohnenranke-Fans, ihr werdet es lieben 🌱), verdrehtem Volksglauben und klassischer King-Dunkelheit.
Und dann ist da noch Charlie … Er soll 17 sein, klingt aber oft wie ein Mann mittleren Alters mit all seinen kulturellen Referenzen. Ab und zu erinnerten mich seine Gedanken zu Sport an sein Alter, aber meistens wirkte er älter. Manchmal wünschte ich mir, er würde nicht jede Anspielung erklären. Es wäre schön gewesen, einige dieser Märchen- und Horror-Anspielungen selbst zu entdecken. 🕵️♀️
Das Ende? Zufriedenstellend. Ich mochte, wie King die Geschichte enden ließ.

I really enjoyed the first 150 or so pages where Charlie was spending time with Mr Bowditch but after that, when the 'real' adventure started, I couldn't bring myself to care about any of the characters, not even Charlie. It felt very safe and you knew what was coming at the end of the story. Too many unnecessary deviations from the main plot, a little wordy and way too detail oriented at times.
Could have DNFed it actually.

Aquele do menino que começa a ajudar o velho que tem uma cachorra. Fiquei com pena da cachorra. acabei não terminando pq estava nervosa com o bem-estar dela. Lento, mas bom.
