It’s been a loooooong time since I’ve read a Stephen King book.
I remember why.
The books could be edited in half & not lose any of the story.

Only my second King novel... so I had little preconceptions. I enjoyed the vibes of Pan's Labyrinth meets Mad Max of the 21st century. It was an enjoyable read. It was quirky and fantastical and met all expectations in that way. But still did not read like a 28 yo writing in 2022 about his 17 yo adventure. Even someone old at heart. The phrases (pre-Empis) just did not line up.
May not have bothered anyone else... but since "Charlie" is essentially my age, I was pretty fixated on that and couldn't stop being distracted by it.
A surprise twist at some point would have also made this 5 star read.

I’m not usually one who enjoys fantasy books, but Stephen King always does it for me. This book had me hooked from the start, and I couldn’t help but love all of the characters—those of our world and Empis.
