This was ok. I think I wanted more of the eerie SK I know and that might be dragging my rating down. It’s a very detailed and intricate story, the characters are like-able, but honestly I just didn’t love it. It was comfortable and almost cozy. Most likely, just not what I wanted.
I didn’t give myself enough time to finish this book and then my Libby hold expired and I had to wait forever for it to be available again. Oops.
This book was fun to read! The end felt a bit rushed but I do love a happy ending.

What an interesting book! I'm not typically a Stephen King reader since I don't do horror but this is like a fantasy and thriller with a tad bit of horror. I'm not sure what I expected but this was not it; in a good way!
spoiler alert: the dog is OK throughout the book ♥️

Fairy Tale by Stephen King: A Dark, Eccentric Trip Into Another World
Alright, so Fairy Tale by Stephen King is exactly what you'd expect from the master of horror—if by “exactly what you'd expect,” you mean "Oh, I’m in for something incredibly weird but fascinating". This isn't your average fantasy novel, and if you thought King was just about creepy clowns and haunted hotels, think again.
The story centers around Charlie, your regular high school kid with some pretty extraordinary things happening to him. The poor guy’s just trying to deal with his normal teen angst until—surprise—he finds himself wrapped up in a bizarre adventure involving a cursed land, an ancient well, and a whole lot of monsters. And no, this isn’t some random portal fantasy you can easily dismiss; King brings his signature psychological depth to the table, throwing in existential crises and just the right amount of cosmic horror to keep you on the edge of your seat.
It’s a bit of a wild ride with Charlie, who gets caught up in events far bigger than he ever imagined. The world of Empis (the fantastical realm at the heart of the story) is like something out of a fever dream—where danger lurks in every corner, but there's also a strange beauty to it all. And, like any classic King tale, it’s never just about the monsters; it's about the human element, the personal growth, and the questions of fate and free will.
The pace isn’t fast in the traditional sense—there’s a lot of building, a lot of setting up—but when things pick up, they REALLY pick up. King has a way of weaving suspense into the most unexpected moments, and that’s definitely present here.
If you're into sprawling, imaginative tales with depth and plenty of twists that keep you second-guessing everything, this one’s for you. It’s not a traditional fantasy; it’s a weird, gripping, slightly off-kilter journey that’s 100% Stephen King. There’s horror, sure, but it’s more about how strange and unsettling this alternate world can get—and how a regular kid might just find himself in way over his head.
Should you read it? If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if a fantasy novel had a Stephen King spin, Fairy Tale is your answer. It’s a slow burn, but it’s the kind of burn that’ll have you wondering what kind of insane story he’ll pull out next. It’s creepy, fantastical, and totally unpredictable. Just know that you’re in for an unpredictable ride.
Final Verdict: Fairy Tale is a dark, twisted adventure that feels more like a fever dream than anything else, with just the right amount of eerie tension to keep you hooked. If you’re looking for a more traditional fantasy epic, this might not be for you—but if you’re up for an imaginative, wild, and occasionally unsettling ride, dive in.
