The plot was fast paced and entertaining. I was intrigued by the FMC’s goal and tactics. I enjoyed the humor and internal dialogue.

After reading parade/nautical books in the past, I wish there was a little more of the sea faring details. I wanted to have the essence of life on the water… Instead it felt like they were on land or docked the entire time.

The magic is intriguing and I can’t wait to learn more. I feel like it’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The characters are fun and I enjoy that there are elements being held back. The FMC’s sassiness and grit makes her enjoyable. I even enjoy that she is so cut throat. She has to be as a Pirate Captain. I’m interested to learn more about her upbringing.

The relationship between the brothers is still a mystery to me, but I like the contradictory nature of the MMC and how he seems to be internally struggling with the pirate way of life. I’m interested to see his development in the next book.

One issue I had was with the book claiming to be the female equivalent to Jack Sparrow. The FMC is definitely not. I also wish there was a little more world building. The intricacies to how this world works under the Pirate King could have been flushed out more. So much of it seems a little vague.

The other issue I had was the believability that the most feared and skilled in the book were under 20. That an entire crew was so young was just asking too much. It made certain people stick out like a sore thumb, thus completely obvious.

But it was a fun read and I highly suggest it for younger teenage readers.

[NO SPOILERS]
such a good fantasy read. i would highly recommend for ages 15 and above. please check the content warnings before reading though. it might be too overwhelming for some people. i would not recommend this book as like the very first book you read as a teen. start with something more lighthearted and easy to read. read this after like 5 different books or so. its a really good book for getting into fantasy though!

(the content warnings i've put is for both the first and second book of this duology)

I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! So I originally got this book with a friend during a very expensive trip to the bookstore. My friend had read, and very highly recommended, it and I was like “What the heck? I guess I’ll try it.” She even tried to get me to buy the second one at the time, which I didn’t. It is safe to say I am really regretting that decision and that I will never doubt her choice in books again.

Like I said it was a very expensive trip to the bookstore so I had a LOT of books to read and this one was not very high on the list. So at first I picked it up and read about 15 pages and then started reading another book. About a month later I picked this book up again and OH MY GOD I AM IN LOVE.

I don’t know why I ever put this book down to begin with because it had me hooked from the very first page. This book isn’t like others where the author slowly leads you into the story. No, this book is action packed from the start and doesn’t slow down. But even though it’s fast paced it doesn’t make the book feel rushed. This book is very easy to read, but still makes you think and when this book has you it will not let you go. The characters were amazing, the author could make you either really love a character or really hate them, there really wasn’t an in between. I will say, that at some points in this book I almost laughed out loud. The main character Alosa was just so funny when she would give a sarcastic remark or whenever she would escape her cell on the ship. Although the funniest moments were between Alosa and Riden, her love interest. One of my favorite parts was when Riden left her locked in his room and when he came back she had trashed it.

If you are thinking of reading this book, look no further, this is me telling you to go read it. You will thank me later. Now if you will excuse me I am off to order the second book.
