DID NOT FINISH: 38%

Due to the lack of a coherently explained backstory and the chaotic pie-plot, I have no clue what’s going on. And due to not liking the writing or the characters, and getting very annoyed at all the sneezing on every page, I don’t care to find out anymore.

A, delightful cozy adjacent manners and magic book!

Jemis Greenwing is home in disgrace from university with a broken heart and a cold. He is hoping to fade into the background in his sleepy home town. The secret societies and drug smugglers some as a surprise!

The cons- I would have found this really confusing if I hadn't already read The Hands of the Emperor! It's set in the same universe (ish) and doesn't explain the fall/interim as much as Hands does, this makes for some confusing references especially in the beginning when all the characters were introduced. The other con is the number of characters, I had real difficulty keeping all them all straight and trying to remember their role. The plot and dialogue is slightly bewildering

The pros -  much much witty dialogue and many dry asides! Jemis is an atypical main character/hero and somewhat of a reluctant one.

I will definitely be continuing with the series!

What a delight!

Possibly also the closest to having an actual plot that I’ve seen from Goddard yet, but that’s not saying much

I enjoyed this book very much! A delightful mix of magic and comedy of manners with plenty of plot points to explore in further escapades.
