I like to reread this series in winter, since it generally has cozy vibes (except for the creepy cult in this one, haha), and since my previous read left me feeling a little down, it’s Greenwing and Dart to the rescue! There are some great characters in this series and this is a fun introduction to them, even though the plot is frustratingly confusing and the last chunk drags on (I always understand the explanation at the end, and then that understanding slips right out of my head, but it honestly doesn’t matter as the relevant points will pop up in later books). It’s also fun to reread this series after exploring the rest of Goddard's world and catching all sorts of little hints and jokes. But the second book is WAY more fun so I’m gonna jump right into that.

Lots of canon to cram in but entertaining and good.

This seems like it should be better than it was. It has a clever mystery plot and interesting characters and sound world-building. But it was also kind of clunky in places, could be obnoxiously English, and a good bit of the mystery is solved outside of a perspective that the reader is exposed to. Plus a whole lot of overly convenient things happen to make the story work, which made it feel fairly contrived at points. I'm continuing in the series because I could see how a writer could do good things with the elements introduced in this novel. I don't expect the next story to be less enjoyable than this one and this one was good enough for a light read.

I hadn't known Victoria Goddard wrote other books, and had come to this after reading The Hands of the Emperor. Stargazy Pie is considerably faster, less verbose, and more lighthearted than that, if you have read it.

Jemis is a character told less in action and more in story. To be perfectly honest, he has all the trappings of an interesting protagonist, but is surrounded by considerably more interesting characters, so he gets a little lost. There is hope for him though, as
he is set up to be a magic user himself
. Overall, this book is delightful, short, and palatable for the faint of heart.

I like this book a lot, and the sequels are even better. The style is unusual and can take a bit of time to get used to - it's sort of purposefully overdramatic but in the best way, fun and sometimes comedic. The series has great characters and friendships and a lot of worldbuilding. When a new book in the series is released, I tend to do everything and finish it within the day!
