I love the characters, and found the story much more purposeful in its prose than the hands of the sun series (likely due to the shorter page count). Goddard is a master of the fantasy of working hard and suffering without glory and then being adored and loved by your family and friends who are in horror that you had to go through so much without their knowledge- you can expect this theme through all her books, and it certainly isn't absent here!

Well, that was deeply silly.
Jemis Greenwing has had an emotionally rough time of late. Well, "of late" might be too mild a term for it. His father long disgraced, his university graduation in shambles and his heart broken, Jemis returns to the town he grew up in to perform the less than prestigious work of book shop assistant. But not everyone in town find Jemis loathsome and there is a mystery afoot! A mystery that starts with an unappetizing fish pie.
A fun read! I enjoyed Jemis as a character and I was pulled in both by his personal woes and by the mystery of the plot. If you've read and enjoyed Hands of the Emperor, I highly recommend this book to you! If you haven't, I'm sure it's an enjoyable read as well, but since I'm already familiar with the setting through reading the author's earlier books I have a hard time determining if this is the best place to dive in. I do recommend reading Victoria Goddard's books though! It's a fun and diverse world when it comes to both societies, magic and people.
