Rilke

A noir romance. Populated by the broken and the breaking, their lives steered by the dual forces of passions beyond their control and the seductive allure of the money that promises happiness but leads inexorably to its ruin.

A doomed love affair in post WWII New York from the perspective of a 40-year old man. In Love is a book about not knowing that you are in love, not giving enough, resentment, bitterness, jealousy, cowardice, heartbreak, anger, and more importantly love, healthy or not. Almost anyone who has ever been in love can feel at least a line or two of what this man was feeling.

“There were times when I would forget her, though they were rare, and it would be for a time as though she had never existed; and then some passing girl's inadvertent gesture, or an accidental profile, or a hat like hers, would restore her, and restore the suffering too, and I would long again, somehow, to encounter or to see her.”

The male perspective threw me off at times, but then again how could a story written by a man in 1950 about a man's opinion on women not have that effect on me. Pretty much the reason why this is not a 5 stars for me.
