A celebratory analysis of the lives of Black women living in society the constantly holds up old barriers and creates new ones for them. This was another library audiobook and I appreciate that they chose a narrator that was relatable and didn't sound like a newscaster. This book uses interviews and history to examine oppression and archetypes in pop culture that Black women face. Short and accessible book.

Black women are multifaceted and I loved reading their stories in this book. Part essay and part journalistic paper, it was informative and well researched. This is a great book to get started on Black women's issues and Black feminist theory.

White womanhood and black womanhood are subjected to very different expectations and pressures. This is really good starting book for learning about the differences. The writing is clear, easy and accessible. A must read.
This is important book for understanding why WAP threatens people in different ways then Madonna or Peaches did.
The media seems to zigzag from decrying the brokenness of black womanhood to declaring “Black Women will save us all”. These pressures quite literally kill.

This is a good look at how African American women are viewed through media and how those limiting tropes bleed over in how they are viewed in everyday life. This is a great starter book to taking an inside look at the intersectionality of race, feminist ideas, and sexuality. I would love to see an updated version of this book through the lens of the aftermath of the 2016 election and the global swing to conservatism and nationalism.
