Gillian Flynn’s Sharp Objects meets Shirley Jackson’s We Have Always Lived in a Castle in this atmospheric horror YA novel!! I’ve seen a few people say that all of the true horror comes at the end and I agree, but there was also enough intrigue to keep me reading. The end was also abrupt, which heightened the tension but made the beginning of the book feel like a lot of filler. Overall decent YA story, and one of my favorite book covers ever

We’ll…that feel like an abrupt ending. I don’t normally read dark/horror/mysteries, but I did enjoy this read. It was creepy and weird and kept me invested in the story. The one thing I wish we had more of were some backstories to fully flesh out this book. Especially in regards to North Manor, some of the town people we met a long the way and why there seemed to be a history of anger. I feel like there was so much more to this story that we didn’t get. Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this one! Great October read.

The main character literally eats books. I thought it was a metaphor or a one time thing but no multiple times we see her tearing pages out and eating them. And I didn’t think it would get more weird than that. But spoiler alert it did!

This book was very eerie. And the ending really had me shocked.

I feel for her mom and hate her at the same. It’s clear that she has a lot of trauma but I feel like if her mom told her the truth from the get that ending could have been avoided.

I can’t believe Jane just stood there and watched it happened….

maybe the real horror was the intergenerational trauma we found along the way

I bought this book purely for the cover as it gave me House of Hollow vibes and I was not disappointed. This book executes the haunted house trope perfectly. I was not excepting it to be so creepy due to being a YA horror but some scenes in this book definitely made my skin crawl. I 100% recommend this book for someone who is wanting to get into the horror genre or someone who loves a good haunted house full of secrets story.
