Incredibly unique style and really vivid writing. The setting, atmosphere, and emotions are all very richly detailed, and once things got going I couldn’t stop reading. There are lots of layers to symbolism and metaphors, as well as to the relationships between characters.
The ending was unexpected and shocking, and left me sort of just staring into the middle distance for a while. I hated it as the conclusion for characters I had grown to love but loved it as a piece of writing.
Graphic: Blood, Bullying, Death of parent, Body horror, Child death, Grief, Mental illness, Self harm, Death, Eating disorder, Gaslighting, Injury/Injury detail, and Panic attacks/disorders
Moderate: Animal cruelty, Suicide, Violence, and Vomit
Minor: Confinement

I had devoured this book.
It tasted bitter and left an unsettling feeling.
It was delicious. It was bizzare. It was horrid. And i love it from the first bite.
There was a little girl
Who had a little curl
Right in the middle of her forehead
And when she was good
She was very, very good
But when she was bad
She was horrid
She couldn’t remember the first book she had eaten.
What it had tasted like, how it had felt—the scratch of it as it slid down her throat.
She couldn’t remember why she’d done it. She must have been a baby, a toddler, ripping pages out of a picture book about a talking stuffed animal.
Had the smell of books calmed her down then, as it did now?
Moderate: Child death, Death of parent, Mental illness, Body horror, and Pregnancy
