This book was a combination of Twilight and Harry Potter. A high school aged girl finds out she's a vampire and has to go to vampire school. Where she finds out she's the chosen one, and has one arch enemy within the student body. I wish I had read this in high school. I would have appreciated it more. I'll continue on with the 2nd book to see how it pans out.

Revisiting this series after years, I found it to be over hyped still. The lore remains intriguing, offering a unique take on vampires. It was a fast, engaging read, despite some weaknesses.

Be aware, however, that the book contains more sexual content than I remembered. Additionally, the writing leans cheesy and relies on overused tropes. The female protagonist's voice sometimes employs language that might be construed as misogynistic.

Overall, this is not a book for young teens. For mature readers who can navigate the dated elements, it can be a fun, albeit flawed, escape.

At its best this series is a B+! With that being said I do enjoy this book. It’s fun and has very likable characters. Teens learning to be vamps and having supernatural powers is interesting to me!
It has a lot of Saturday special moments. The author is a high school teacher; which I appreciate since I’m one too, so I can see when she is trying to have the characters set good example and show consequences for bad decisions. Would I recommend it to my high school students....yes. Be warned there is cursing and some f-bombs like in a real school. There is also some blunt sexual references (ex. a character says another character has sex...no details...just staring someone did something)

The plot and the character of Zoey is so bad in this book that I almost flung it across the wall (but couldn't exactly because I own the audiobook copy and I have only got my phone for half a year). So here is a breakdown of the strengths and weaknesses of this book:

*** The good parts:

1) The subcharacters: In particular Damien and Stevie Ray. These two characters are sympathetic and supportive throughout the book, and the only reason why I even make it to the end. Stevie Ray is cute and loyal, and Damien! Oh my lovely Damien! I'd trade my fortune for a wise, good friend like him.

2) The conceptual foundation of the story: There are plenty of vampire stories out there and in most cases, they jump from humans to vampires. I am not a fan of vampire literature for long enough to know whether the idea of "fledglings" is original or not, but the description of the transitional stage is certainly entertaining.

*** The horrible parts:

1) Zoey Redbird: She is a perfect example of a disastrous protagonist in a novel! This bitch (no offense but she is really nothing more than a bitch at best) is manipulative, selfish, self-centered, bossy, has a lust for power but is acting like an innocent, pitiful little bird who is just trying to adapt!
Spoiler She says Aphrodite is selfish, bullying, and horrible, so she tries to right the wrong by ACTING EXACTLY LIKE APHRODITE, a.k.a. to become a selfish, bullying, and horrible leader of the dark daughters! This is just like to end a war, I have to start a war! Erk! I hate Zoey! Also, she is only thinking about how people treat her and making people believe she is the victim but how is she treating the people around her? Regardless how terrible Heath might have become after becoming a heavy drinker and doing marujuana, you shouldn't just feel disgusted! You should help and support the guy (unless he's just a sex machine to her or there to boast her ego.) Another thing, the whole imprinting thing, I mean Heath IS the victim and she's the guilty party but she never even feels remorse for her influence over Heath. Although I dislike Heath, I pity him for having ever fallen in love with such a bitch!

2) The plot: Now where EXACTLY IS THE PLOT? I find this a problem in plenty of Young Adult fiction. The author just relates scene after scene but not really have a logical plot.

3) The painstaking details: Zoey is kind enough to recite every single detail of her schedule in the book, and yet ignore to give detailed description to the environment around her. The world building is crappy but the book drags on because the author devotes pages and pages to unimportant details.

And I can go on and on with my ramblings but I fear other reviewers have already done that and so, I shall end my conclusion with just one comment:

DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!

Pretty good for a YA!

I read this series when my aunt recommended it to me in Jr. High. I was completely obsessed then & I’m gonna see how far I get back into the series this time around, years and years later!!
