I was excited for this book, especially since (at the time) I enjoyed Cinder and I found it pretty good and lighthearted, but this book annoyed Me.

Characters
  • Scarlet- I like hotheaded characters. I liked Keith from Voltron, Bakugo from MHA, Katara from avatar and vi from arcane. But, I found Scarlet to be…annoying?? Scarlet is a hotheaded, impulsive, melodramatic girl. I honestly think the reason why I hated her was because she’s soooo childish. She throws temper tantrums that would make a 5 year old embarrassed. Also, fun fact, she throws tomatoes for fun. I also thought she was stupid. She decided to trust a wolf after he lied to her, instead of reaching the conclusion that she should trust him a little bit less and be more careful around him. She completely falls in love with him, which just doesn’t make sense to me like at all like all the red flags are there and she just ignores them.
  • Wolf- look, I like a gentle giant more than the next guy, but I’m so annoyed by Wolf. I think the reason I don’t like him is because werewolf type characters make me…uncomfortable?? I hate when humans are compared to animals and the whole alpha thing bothered me. (Also, alphas aren’t a thing scientifically speaking, so it made it more annoying)
  •  Kai- Kai's solution to the Lunar problem makes absolutely no logical sense. I still don’t understand how this is still a plot point. I can't give him credit for being and wanting to be a leader because he's only making the situation worse. His decision to marry Queen Levana doesn't reduce the Lunar threat, and, in fact, increases it. He’s choosing a bandaid solution to save a bullet wound. He knows Queen Levana plans to kill him after they're married and use the Commonwealth as a stepping stone to taking over the planet. Marrying her does bring about temporary peace, but it also puts Earth in more danger. I also don’t understand how he hasn’t figured out that Cinder in the princess girl. Like…the clues are RIGHT UNDER YOUR NOSE!!!
  • Cinder- USE EMAIL!!!

Plot
Since this is a retelling the basic story is predictable. If you e live 2 minutes on this earth you would know that
Wolf was going to betray Scarlet. I think if we had known less about Wolf’s motivations and history because his trajectory is spoiled by the Queen’s Army.

                Romance
I don't like relationships that develop super passionately in a short period of time. Scarlet and Wolf don’t know each other for that long at most they knew each other for what 3, 2 days maybe and they act like they’re like life partners and it just really annoys me.
Alpha fricking male and alpha fricking female?WHY???????  I hated Wolf and Scarlet even more just for this. Also, it got waaaaay worse when Scarlet literally being like: Wolf - ArE YoU aSkiNg mE To bE yOuR aLpHa FeMalE?"

I got into this series after finishing Kingdom of Ash and surprisingly found myself loving the characters so much after book 2 kicked off. It's YA but the book's ending gets pretty dark which really took me by surprise - absolutely wasn't expecting that. The scenes were well paced, really enjoyed the action in this one. Overall, I enjoyed Cinder a lot but this one took on a lot more drama & character development/depth. Already in love with the series and it's characters (I mean, the girls!!! And the boys too- all pretty well written, not clones of each other, not too cringey... The relationships being that fast to get emotional can be put on their age plus the stress they're in)

Not quite as exciting as its predecessor, but still holds up as a decent YA scifi, though the red riding hood connection is a little more forced than the other adaptations in the series.

there was a lot of dubious stuff in this one tbh, but the Rampion crew dynamic is really fun I wish there was more of that

I love the storyline of this series so much, but i find the two female leads are written with very similar personalities. I think they could have a lot more depth to add more to the story. Still, I’m quite excited for the next book in the series!
