This book felt like putting on a worn pair if slippers. It was old Valdemar, how I love it. Written in her usual template, it was so enjoyable to read. There wasn't much new, but that's what I liked. I could read Arrows of the Queen over and over. It's like Harry Potter, we all just KNOW our letters to Hogwarts somehow got misplaced and we KNOW our Companions will come sometime. I'll buy the next in the series when the price comes down a bit.

I loved seeing Mags' journey continue, he really is one of my favourite characters.

Formulaic, but a formula I've always enjoyed, so I can't hold it against it that much.

New story, same wonderful land
Valdemar gets a little bigger, or at least it’s history does, in this addition to the long running series. Set after The Last Herald Mage trilogy, but before Arrows off the Queen, it has some familiar faces and far more new names. Is not the beginning of Valdemar, but it is the beginning of the heraldic collegium when far too many trainees were showing up and far too mentors. Interesting.

I feel like the characters make up for the lack of plot, that seems to happen in the last 100 pages of this book, I feel like the title perfectly reflects what this first book is and I want to read more!

One thing I can always count on is a good read from Mercedes Lackey and her Valdemar series. Always a good read, I can step into this series after not reading it for a while and it will always always fit like a glove.

Super cute story, wholesome with some nice little life lessons. Was a good introduction into fantasy as someone who typically doesn't choose this genre.
