The dialogue in the first half of this book seemed very unnatural. I'm not sure if I'll read the rest of the trilogy.
I have read a few Eve Duncan mysteries in the past, but not in any kind of order or without even realizing that I was reading a series. Funny how mystery series can be like that, eh? My mom bought me this whole series to help me recup from a hospital stay (and also because she loves Eve Duncan). So I thought I'd give it a shot, as I do have a tendency to love mysteries and I was not disappointed.
I enjoyed how the story went back to the beginning - to when Eve met John and how Bonnie came to be in the world. Obviously, having only read book one, I don't know who the bad guy is, but if it turns out to be John - then I am going to be annoyed that Iris Johansen has set us up to like him - only to rip him away from us. I'm really sick of unreliable narrators. The flashback was a good chunk of the book - but I really wish it had gone on past the birth to when Bonnie was taken. As I haven't read the series continuously, I am unfamiliar with it. Overall though, I enjoyed the flashback, and was even pleasantly surprised at how long it was - normally flashbacks are only a couple chapters, not 100 pages - so this was an unexpected change.
The plot moved quickly following the flashback. Eve, Catherine and Joe seemed to zip around the country rather quickly once the flashback ended. There was a lot of action and I really enjoyed the guessing game of who the bad guy was. It seemed to turn out though that everyone was a bad guy. Which is a bit confusing to say the least.
If you are familiar with this series then you already know the characters very well. Eve is a strong woman - hooray! Catherine is a strong woman - hooray! Joe is a strong man - hooray! Wait a second - everyone is really, really strong - damn it, just became a little unbelievable. Although Eve's strength does at times seem to be a facade, she does everything she can to protect her loved ones, even if they don't listen to her. I enjoyed the characters, particularly the strength shown by the women, and how much everyone cares for each other. The villains were also of interest, especially because there were so many of them featured. Three - that seems high to me. Alas, some people just need to die I guess. Wasn't disappointed there.
And the ending! Oh. My. God. How do you end a book like that?! Are you kidding me? Ah! Made me want to go get Quinn right away to find out what happened. I will read it soon, but I managed to restrain myself.
Overall, an excellent beginning of an explanation of the mystery surrounding Eve and Bonnie Duncan.

A very much anticipated novel and it's too bad that I know it's one of the last 3 that will hopefully explain what happened to Bonnie. Learnt a lot about Eve's background, so that was fairly interesting in itself. Can't wait until the next book.
If you are reading this thinking that you will (finally!) find out the identity of Bonnie's killer...think again.
Sigh.
I *get* that Johansen has built her main character with a huge chunk of Eve's drive and reason for living all about finding Bonnie's killer...but how many more books will she be able to draw it out? My guess? 2 more. (Since Eve is the first book of a "trilogy"--followed by Quinn, where I guess we'll be able to understand why Joe is willing and able to be so pussy-whipped even though Eve pisses him off most of the time; and then finishing with "Bonnie" where we'll see...I have no idea.)
So, so of the good things: we find out about Bonnie's conception and Eve's life in the 'hood before she got knocked up.
Um. Yeah.
Some annoying things: the way Eve keeps referring to Jane as, "my adopted daughter" or "Jane MacGuire...my daughter". Duh! Everyone knows who the hell Jane is. The cast of eleventy-bajillion characters. I can't keep them all straight. The ever-present "evil empire" government employees. Really? It sounds like everyone who works for the feds is dirty.
So, will I read the others? Yep, because I want to finish the story once and for all...and I'm a glutton for punishment.

If you have not yet read the last novel about Eve, “Chasing the Night”, you will want to read it before this particular novel, since it incorporates the same characters, and while the novel stands independently, you will understand it much more with the background information from “Chasing the Night”. I did not know this going into “Eve”.
Unputdownable. So fast-paced and suspenseful with a lot of helpful background information about Eve's relationship with Bonnie's father, John Gallo. And it ends on a cliff-hanger so make sure you have the next book (Quinn) on your nightstand ready to go!
