Wow, this was a riveting story. It was so well-written and is a true story. The author, recounting his very own story, tells how he was tricked into traveling with some men who then kidnapped him and sold him to a slave trader who sold him into slavery. He worked as a slave, first for a kind master and then for the most wicked wretch of a master there could be, for 12 years. Miraculously he is able to get in touch with an influential person in his home town back in New York and is eventually returned to his home to live again as a free man. I think this book is so powerful because it is an insider's story. It's written by a person who actually experienced the horrible abuses of the system of slavery.

Extremely moving. Solomon's exceptional bravery and perseverance in the face of a tragic fate are worthy of applause.

The rather interesting true life story of Solomon Northup. Raised as a free man in a Northern state a few years before the American Civil War, he had the misfortune to be tricked into bondage and spends twelve years as a slave in the South before regaining his freedom.

Solomon provides us with his perspective and experience of the institution of slavery as well as describing many of the things he saw during his captivity. The editor's extensive background information included in this enhanced edition complements Solomon's narrative nicely.
