This was an excellent book. I both read and listened to the audio book and thought both were well done.

Such an amazing and heart wrenching account. I live in New Orleans and I love history. I’ve also visited a few plantations and read about the horrors of slavery, but this is the first time I’ve read a first hand account. A fascinating and heartbreaking read, but one of those special books that will always stay with me. I cried a few times, especially over Eliza’s plight. Considering what he was put through, Mr. Solomon did an amazing job being fair to everyone. All slavery is wrong, but there were some kind masters out there, while others were cruel and wicked. And while slavery wasn’t the only reason the Civil War was fought, I’m glad it was one of the important issues people were fighting to abolish and I’m sure this book helped fuel the cause. I think this is one of those books that every American should read.

It was a great informational book. I just watched the movie before, so it was more predictable for me. But otherwise, it was five stars. HIs perspective and story as a slave are amazing.

A unique perspective. This memoir was very well-written and I enjoyed the foreshadowing with touch points for each chapter heading. It does not go too heavily in depth on his 12 years in bondage, instead choosing indelible moments to demonstrate his experience. Of course there are horrifying moments, not only when Epps flogs Northup and the other slaves, but even more for me when he makes Northup flog his friends.

This book should be on the reading list for every American History class!
