What in the world was this? I'm so upset. Something really happened with the editing because suddenly the centuries or millennia old gods are talking in modern slang, and the characters feel so much more juvenile than before. Also these four books take place over the span of like four months?? With the exception for the last two chapters in this one, which skip to the end of Sera's pregnancy and then write a cute lil summary of the next couple hundred years. Most of this book could've been shaved down by at least half. The most interesting and important things happen in the last 20%. There are so many unanswered questions, things that would have been far more interesting to read about and don't even get me started on the smut in this book. They're f***ing in the most inappropriate moments and the kisses are "starved" and "devouring" every single time. I read smut, a lot of it, but good gods these two were disturbingly horny the whole time and not even remotely reasonable or responsible enough. They were like two teenagers and that ruined the characters - whom I previously loved, mind you - in a big way. It takes away from their bond, the intended romance and devotion, when all they think about is how hot and mouthwatering the other is. Can you tell I'm pissed? Because I am. The potential is there and I would give a lot to go back and have someone edit the hell out of these books. One star for the couple chapters that were enjoyable.

This might be the first time I rated a book from the flesh&fire or blood&ash series less than 4 stars. 🤔
I understand, that this book was necessary for the timeline to evolve naturally which is good because it didn’t feel rushed at all. That’s also why I’m glad it exists.
Major plot points were also resolved and given which are necessary for the blood & ash series. What wasn’t my cup of tea tho was that nothing was really happening.. most of it was playing in Sera’s head.
The way it takes her until the last 200 pages to figure out she’s pregnant was just a bit annoying.. Every time she was nauseous I was screaming.
Other than that I liked it - it’s like the feeling of coming home after a normal day of work. Not like going on vacation after a long week, but still good.✨

I stayed up until 2am to finish this book. Not because I was so invested, but because I couldn’t wait for it to be over. Which is kind of heartbreaking since I loved every other book in this series.
The first 100 pages is just straight smut, which is also what the last 80 pages of the previous book were, so it was more than a little boring. They literally don’t leave their bedroom for 100 pages. Ash and Sera barely had a relationship outside of their bed. There was barely any banter, not a single discussion that didn’t end up with Sera “flushing with heat.”
The editing was awful. On one page they would say an event happened 2 weeks ago, two pages later it happened yesterday. And considering nothing happens in 60% of this book, the repetition is wild.
The pacing was completely off, we’d spend 200 pages on 2 days and then 50 pages on 2 weeks. It was exhausting.

The only reason this isn’t a 1 star is because when the plot WAS progressing, the scenes hit and they hit hard. JLA’s depiction of Sera’s trauma and PTSD was very well done. The conflict Sera felt over the choices she was making were believable and heart wrenching.
But if this weren’t the final book in the series and I wasn’t already so invested, I would have DNF’d.
