Not a dull moment from start to finish.

This book was like a puzzle - one that you had to build without a guiding image to go off of. The first few chapters were frustrating, with a lot of world building to take in - although I was immediately drawn to Rielle and her story. With such a strong set up in the prologue I just had to know who she was and the events that lead up to such a climax. It took me a while longer to understand (or care about) Eliana - but as I read more and more of their stories, the puzzle pieces started to fall quickly into place and I read the last half in one sitting! I cannot wait to find out what happens in the next instalment and hope the wait won't be too long!

This book was annoying. I only liked one of the two stories. The two main characters especially Rielle were very annoying at the end. I did like the flirt between Simon and Eliana. Not interesting enough to buy the second book.

There's a lot of good aspects to this book, but it's also rough in a lot of ways. My biggest complaint is that the story jumps back and forth between character perspectives every single chapter. They're not long chapters, either. Because of this, it became really hard to feel all that invested in either storyline until I was at least two thirds through the book.

I love the story concept, and there's a ton of potential with the character development of the characters in the later storyline. The earlier timeline is harder to read at times because the book starts with how that part of the story ends. At times I felt like I was just being dragged toward the inevitable in that timeline, but then the story doesn't even conclude at the end of this book. It would have been better if Legrand had written two separate books in order to build momentum in the storytelling and to allow the reader to have a chance to connect with the characters before being jerked 1000 years forward or backward every 10-15 pages.

All this being said, I am starting the second book in the series. There's still a lot of potential for the story to improve further, there are several characters that are pretty interesting and I'm hoping they are given more depth in the next installment. I appreciate that the main characters are not pigeon-holed as being a specific type of heroine, but instead have a lot more gray areas to their motivations and morality.

If you like this genre, I think it's still worth the read, but it's not going to be for everyone.

I had not really heard anything about this book and I’m glad because I had no expectations one way or the other. This is a solid 4-star book with the potential to get 5 stars as the series progresses. The two main characters are solid as are the side characters. Honestly, I am more invested in Simon and Remy than the other characters, they are both fantastic! The world-building and magic systems are written so you can picture them.

The writing is original and easy to read but can be a bit repetitive between the two timelines. The chapters alternate back and forth between the two timelines and Rielle and Eliana. I was definitely more invested in Eliana’s story and timeline, but also feel that Rielle’s story is important in order to understand Eliana’s.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As a reader, I really enjoyed the parallels between Rielle and Eliana, mother and daughter even though they live a century apart. What’s really enjoyable, though, is their polar opposite character arcs. Rielle started out as a good character (minus the first chapter), and Eliana starts out as a pretty terrible person granted she was doing what she needed to for her family to survive. I love when we get the opportunity to read and learn about a character that isn’t good, and what events transpire to lead them down that path, which is why I particularly love Rielle’s arc from sweet girl to Blood Queen (which we haven’t fully witnessed, since we learned in the first chapter of Audric’s death but that hasn’t transpired yet in the rest of the story). Eliana is on the reverse path being a terrible person turning toward the light to save the world. The events that hardened her took place before the story picks up, so we don’t see much other than snippets of memories of Rozen.

An aspect of the story that I both enjoyed and found aggravating was how every chapter alternated viewpoints between Rielle and Eliana. This wouldn’t have been so bad if each chapter didn’t also happen to end on a cliffhanger, so instead of the age old “just one more chapter”, it became “just two more chapters.” This helped to keep me devouring the book because I just wanted to know what happened next. However, there were times where I felt like it made the story too choppy. At times, it would have either flowed better if either each chapter didn’t alternate or if the chapters ended a different points.

There is one element of this story that I can’t wait to see where it goes next, Simon! I want more of Simon’s story between when he lost Eliana as an infant to when he found her as the Dread of Orline. What has he been through that created all the scaring? How did he become the Wolf? Who is the Prophet, and how did Simon meet him? I have so many questions, and I hope that they’ll be answered in the upcoming books.

5 Stars

One of the most satisfying things in the world is when you get approved for a book you are dying to read. I was ecstatic to get approved. I have heard nothing but good things about this book.

The story revolves around two women, Rielle and Eliana whose stories intertwine even though they are separated by time. The story is told from both women and we slowly get to see how their stories intersect. There is magic, love, and war which let’s face it are the best makings of a book.

I will admit, it took me sometime to finish this book. But it was the fact that there were so many characters I became overwhelmed for a time. I just needed to adjust and when I finally did become engrossed I had a difficult time putting it down. I have already pre-ordered the book and May cannot come soon enough.

I genuinely loved this book and I think those who are fans of YA/NA fantasy books would love it too. The waiting for the next one is going to be pure torture.

This book should've been up my alley, but I couldn't get into it. The perspective changed between Rielle (the past) and Eliana (the present). Unfortunately most of the time, their voices were very similar and I had trouble switching gears to get into the other's narrative. While they took place in the same universe, it felt like two different books to me. The prologue basically ruined any surprises that would've happened in Eliana's narrative, but I'm not sure if the author wanted it to be a surprise. I think I would have preferred the book to have been divided into two parts, the first to be Rielle's and the second to be Eliana's instead of having the alternating chapters. They didn't mesh anyways and it would've helped the story flow better.

There wasn't much in their personalities that kept me enraptured in the story. It might have been the jarring switching between characters that broke my focus. I would usually read a chapter or two at a time, and never really experienced any binges where I really got into the story. Since I wasn't vested in the story it was pretty hard for me to care about what was going on. I liked Rielle's story better than Eliana's but once the trails started I didn't care as much anymore. How many stories have we seen with constructed trials of some sort of to test the mettle of the main character? It just seemed a silly context to me.

I was happy to be finally done with it. It took me a month to finally finish and I'm not that curious about the next books. I'm not really sure what would happen in the next one because she didn't set up any cliffhangers. I'm sure it'll be about defeating Corien, but I don't care that much.

4.5/5 ⭐

There are little things that bothered me during my reading and some other things that I thought slowed the story a bit, but I have to admit: this book definitely has one of the BEST world-building I ever read about in fantasy. The author took care SO MUCH of the universe, I am so impressed and in awe. Moreover, Rielle and Eliana have such unique, intricated personalities and stories. They're memorable characters like no other, and they made all the difference. Furyborn is a masterpiece.
