When Rielle’s best friend and the heir prince is ambushed, she uses her immense power and magic to save him. But she should not possess such power; only the prophesied Sun Queen and Blood Queen have the power of all seven elements. So, Rielle faces seven challenges in an effort to prove she is the prophesied Sun Queen; if she fails, she will be killed.
One thousand years later, bounty hunter Eliana lives in a world where Rielle’s story is only legend. Eliana has performed bounty services for the Empire and believes she is protected from their wrath – until her mother disappears along with scores of other women in her land. Eliana joins forces with a fierce rebel captain and learns just how much evil reigns in her homeland.
I wanted to like this. It was 491 pages and I gave it a week of my reading time. The opening prologue was FANTASTIC and I was happy to keep reading. But then I started to get uncomfortable with the switch back and forth between Rielle and Eliana and their respective timelines. And I usually adore multi-viewpoint novels. This one felt jarring. It didn’t flow between stories; I felt jerked between the eras.
Most annoying though was the feeling that a big reveal should have happened and was ruined.
When I only care to know the fate of secondary characters (Remy and Navi), I find myself dropping a book rating. In fact, Remy and Navi as well as the opening scene are the things that saved this book from a one-star rating. I mean, when I close the cover for the last time and I actually think “Well, that was fairly forgettable” that is not a good sign. I have no desire to read the sequels.
This was a story with remarkable promise that fizzled and burned.

Spoiler
Why tell us the Wolf is Simon? Since Wolf is Simon, Eliana is obviously going to be Rielle’s daughter. Why not just share that fact when Simon was named? The suspense is gone so you may as well just say it. Either hide it or don’t – do not go halfway. When I only care to know the fate of secondary characters (Remy and Navi), I find myself dropping a book rating. This book🙄
About 20 times I said “I’m going to DNF it now” shouting to my partner because it bugged me so much. But no, I carried on and fought my way through it and was it worth it?
I don’t freaking know?!
I liked Eliana.
I HATED Rielle. Oh and Audric. What a boob.
That is why this book was so difficult to read. One chapter I could enjoy. The next I couldn’t! And I think I finished it because I wanted to know what happened with Eliana in the end! And the ending was sort of okay I suppose, haha.
The reason this book gets a 2/5 is because of Simon and a little bit because of Eliana. But mainly Simon. Oh and Remy. What a freaking cutie!
I mean I cannot recommend this book. I think this book is like Marmite. Some people love it and then the rest can’t stand it haha. This is one of the lowest ratings I have ever given a book😬 Will I pick up Kingsbane? Probably just because now I need to know what happens🤦🏼♀️

I tried my best to like this book. I really liked the storyline tellen Rielle's tale but the whole Eliana thing.. I absolutely hated it and I could just not read that!! I ended up skipping every Eliana chapter. I know I shouldn't but it was too dull. Anyway I liked Rielle's chapters a lot and I think there's a lot of originality in this book and that I appreciate a lot. Thanks author .
4.5/5! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and it’s such a unique format. There were parts where I had to stop the audiobook because I had to take a minute to soak in what just happened. Rielle and Eliana are so different but also so much alike. I can’t wait for Kingsbane to come out next week <3
I adored this book, I'm finding that I really like villain origin stories, I love seeing that backstory and really understanding how a character came to be. Imagine a puff pastry and onion pie, I don't even like onions, but that's how many layers I like in my villians, and this definitely delivers. Apparently I enjoy feeling conflicted, who knew? I can't believe I read the ARC of this and now I have to wait for the sequel, I want it right now!
This is my kind of perfect book.

Second Read
K, so, basically this was even better than I remembered and choosing to re-read this right after that disappointing Game of Thrones finale was exactly the right choice. Kingsbane, you're next!

5 out of 5? Try 10 out of 5. This. Was. So. Damn. Good.
I'd heard a lot about this book, and when I was granted a wish by the publisher I was over the moon! This book did not disappoint at all, and any faults it does have are forgiven so very quickly. As far as fantasy goes, this one is lush, epic, ingenious and utterly gorgeous.
Featuring two strong and kick-ass women as heroines, with a dash of time travel and a whole lot of magic, Legrand has created a story that delivers in romance, action, mystery and sheer fantasy. Even the element of angels was a neat twist. I couldn't tell which MC I loved most, but Legrand is a master-class at suspense and kept me reading through each chapter with a near desperation to find out what happened to either girl. Likewise, the way just enough is revealed in the beginning leaves me with such high levels of curiosity and a burning need to read more of this series! And a round of applause for the secondary characters being just as wonderful. Usually there's just that one that you can't stand, and that was never the case here.
The world-building is spot on too. Some fantasies I've noticed pile so much on at once with little grace or explanation that you find yourself lost throughout the book. Not the case here. The world, the history, the magic, the religions---all of it was easy to understand and stow away in my head.
I have to admit that the book's big plot twist I figured out pretty quickly myself, but it's not in a way that's predictable or ruins the story. If anything, it heightens the magic of the book. As for the minor twists, I was in love. (In case you haven't figured it out yet, this book could literally do no wrong for me.)
As I mentioned, there are a few negatives to it, but the book as a whole is so good that I got over them pretty quick. One was the pace slowed down a bit too much at around the 75% mark, but the ending made up for it. Two, there is a sex scene that is just awko-taco. And I don't mean awkward in a this-is-their-first-time-let's-figure-it-out-together way, but in the way it was written. I found it be a strangely written section with peculiar word choice and description.
Nevertheless, this is a solid start to what I know is going to be a fantastic series. I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy, and I definitely can't wait to read more. Thanks SOURCEBOOKS Fire!

I'm conflicted--on one hand, I liked parts of Furyborn enough to want to pick up the sequel. On the other hand, was it worth 500 pages? I don't think so. And that's not to say I don't enjoy longer books, because I do. And it's easy to get through the chapters quickly...eventually. But it took forever (I'm talking, 200+ pages) for me to really get invested in the story. I just feel like there was a lot that could've been cut out (and not to the detriment of the storyline or character development).
And the other issue was the format. I don't mind alternating POVs, but it's pretty jarring to be pulled 1000 years into the past and/or future like every other chapter. I could've used a little more time with each POV before the switch. But overall,I do think Legrand did a decent job of weaving an intriguing and unique enough story with compelling enough characters, enough that I'd like to continue on with at least the next book in the trilogy.

I loved the world building and the prologue, however this book was soooo long. Plus, despite me enjoying the prologue, it definitely spoiled the big reveal at the end of the book.
I'm really torn about this book. I think the writing was good. I think the plot was fantastic... I just didn't connect with the characters. My disconnect was such that I didn't care at all. I wanted to know what happened in the book because, as previously stated, the plot is wonderful, but I just didn't care. I can't give it more than three stars because of it.
I will definitely give this book another shot later on, but this time around I just didn't like the characters.
