This is one of those books that *could* have been amazing, but doesn't really get there. There are two main characters, both women, living a thousand years apart, with the story switching between them in alternating chapters, which manages not to be confusing. However, neither plot line was that well developed - Rielle's was a series of challenges of her magical ability, which she was clearly going to win, and her making really bad decisions, Eliana's was a lot of fleeing from one place to another, sacrificing her friends to no real purpose. The book had a go air trying to be diverse - there is a gay couple and references to bisexuality, and characters of colour, however it doesn't quite work for me, and feels a bit tacked on. After finishing the book, I came away wishing it had been as great as it could have been, and feeling that it was a huge mess.

bruh its def good
like the plot is pretty plot hole free (with exceptions)
and it makes sense overall
but in general
i felt there were ZERO STAKES!!
like its not even that interesting
trials were overused and bad
elianas quest was more interesting but i hated the characters
like what are you doing bro
so i dont really wanna continue since it seems stupid to do so

It took 200+ pages for this book to get rolling for me. Let’s hope the sequel starts off with a bang!
