Thank you to Netgalley and Sourcebooks Fire for providing me with an e-galley in exchange for an honest review.

Wicked angels, magic, and mystery. Furyborn builds a world full of elemental magic and intrigue with compelling characters. It is the story of two young women and is told alternating between their points of view. There is a prophecy of a Sun Queen and a Blood Queen. One queen will save the world from the angels and the other will destroy it on the angel’s behalf. But, who is which queen?

I loved the premise of this book. I am always a fan of books told during multiple time periods that connect. The characters were well developed and Rielle and Eliana seem so different on the surface but both young women are strong and determined.

The one thing that I did not like about this book is that the chapters are relatively short and almost always end in a cliff-hanger. The chapters also always alternate between Rielle and Eliana. This made the book difficult to get invested in as I often felt frustrated with the constant switching. I felt as though as soon as I was getting invested into one the chapter would end and I would be back to the other. I would have liked to see either longer chapters or not a switch from Rielle to Eliana every chapter.

Overall, an excellent read and I cannot wait to read the next book.

This book wasn’t perfect but I found myself live laugh loving. Great option for fast-paced* political fantasy w some non-cringe romance when you just need to read something comfortable and also GOOD.

*fast-paced in that there’s always things happening but the primary plot is a lil closer to a walk

i started this like "i never finished this series maybe i should! better reread the 1st one to remember what happened" and now ive remembered why

To be honest, though I once loved sweeping, epic, fantasies and the like, I just don't have the attention span for them much any more, so I was impressed when Furyborn not only captured my attention, but held it well enough for me to wake at 5 am just to finish the novel before getting out of bed.

The first of a trilogy, Furyborn begins with a prelude that both ends one of our main character's story and sets the whole series sets the whole story (and dual storylines) into motion.

Rielle and Eliana are two young women, separated by thousands of years that seem to have very little in common and throughout the novel we dance back and forth in time, chapter by chapter to watch their story unfold and discover how the women are tied together.

Rielle is full of incredibly destructive and and untamed magic that her father tries to hide from the king both by teaching her how to control herself and by doing such things as drugging here and keeping her in locked rooms to dull her senses. Despite this, she lives a pampered life and her best friends are the future king and queen of the realm.

Eliana, on the other hand, is a trained killer with (seemingly) no heart who spends her days killing rebels for bounties in order to take care of her mother and brother.

I admit, I really disliked Eliana and felt for Rielle in the beginning of the novel, but as you move on and more of their stories emerge, you start to question who is the Blood Queen and who is the Sun Queen in this dichotomy?

I'm eager to read the next novel and continue their tale!

genuinely no idea why i waited so long to read this, the plot was super intense and i absolutely love eliana and simon. super excited to read the next one

Apparently, the first time I read this, I somehow missed the major age gap romance blooming, and it's literally just a reverse Padme and Anakin.

I first read Furyborn a few years ago, but I never finished the series. I saw it sitting on my shelf and decided it was time for a reread (and maybe I'd actually finish the trilogy this time) because I remembered pretty much nothing about the book. As I reread, I started to remember why I hadn't picked up this book again sooner...
The premise itself is pretty cool; there are two prophesized queens - a Sun Queen and a Blood Queen - and while one will save the world, the other will destroy it. I think everyone agrees that the prologue is the best part of this book because it's one of those stories separated by time but connected in some ways. We know from the prologue how Rielle's story will end, and while I typically love that trope, it seems to work against the story because there aren't any stakes. Rielle is supposed to be enduring these seven deadly trials, but the action is lackluster and incredibly repetitive. Eliana, on the other hand, is your basic YA assassin struggling with her morality (and lack thereof). Her story, while wielding a bit higher stakes, was really trope-y and didn't offer much nuance. In general, the plot twists were relatively predictable, too.
I also realized how much I don't like the characters. Rielle was the worst of the two because everything about her story felt two-dimensional to me. Audric's only purpose is to offer something for Rielle to lust after, and he literally has no personality. Ludivine was a bit more interesting, but only because she's so agreeable it's suspicious. I remembered really liking Simon the first time, but he gave me the major ick. Eliana was okay, but again, she's so trope-y. The same goes for Remy, and any character with the name Navi is immediately disliked for no reason.
Although I intend to keep reading soon (and hopefully finish the trilogy), Furyborn is a generic fantasy novel that offers interesting points mostly through parallels between the characters.

3.25/5

Probably just me but I was constantly confused by who was who. Maybe I should start over again.

4.5⭐️

Wow! I am completely blown away by this story. Claire Legrand has created a magical world that has intrigued me. I love how the story is told between two characters, Rielle and Eliana. I love the emotion that pours out of this book.

There are so many things to say but I have yet to digest them all since I just finished the book. All I can say is, if you pick this book up you won't be disappointed.

Also note, this is a New Adult Fantasy, so don't let the YA tag fool you.
