I typically prefer books set in the present or the future over the past, but Leigh Bardugo has a strong ability to pick non-standard fantasy settings and bring them to life with her creativity and world building

This book was extremely slow-moving. I can't believe I actually finished it because I wanted to DNF so many times. The ending was 100% not worth it. There are so many nuggets of information that aren't explained or connected to the central plot - I'm really disappointed because this has potential, but falls so short of expectations for this author.

A must read for historical fantasy lovers.  The uniqueness of the setting (Spain during the Inquisition) is worth reading this book for alone.  The MC’s position is also a bit unique in genre of YA fantasy, as she is actively and self-admittedly greedy for wealth and power.  A fun, interesting read that does an excellent job of managing multiple POVs of morally gray/ likably unlikable characters.  My only complaints are that the romance feels a tiny bit tacky/tired and that some of the political intrigue elements remain unexplored in favor of focusing on relationships between characters..
