Honestly, I wasn't really sure what to expect going into this book. I knew very little, just that it was set in late 16th century Spain and a woman could do magic. And I'm glad that I didn't have any expectations going into this book.
It has a bit of a slow start. When I was reading it, it felt like it took longer than it actually did for characters to be introduced and for the plot to actually start. The overall pacing of the book is pretty slow. Maybe that's because I never felt like there were particularly highstakes for the characters. I was pretty sure that the main couple would get a happy ending even if no one else did. Although, towards the end I did begin to doubt that.
I wouldn't say that this book was amazing. It was good and I enjoyed reading it. But it's not one that I would recommend to everyone.

All though a slow starter this really gathers pace as the book moves on. More world building in the middle of the book would have been amazing! I enjoyed it.

The individual stories of the very unique journeys the leads embark on brings brilliantly to life the disturbing presence of patriarchal societies. Top notch.

This was my first book by Leigh Bardugo, and I could certainly see picking up another by her. This is historical fantasy with ties to real historical events and figures along with fable, myth, and mysticism woven in. I found the two main characters interesting and complex and their love story believable and compelling. The side characters did seem a bit flat (or perhaps rushed/not as well-developed), but that didn't bother me all that much. I enjoyed this reading experience so much and found myself reaching for this book even when I only had a small sliver of time free - it was great! I don't read a lot of fantasy and felt this had just enough magic to fit into the genre but not so much that the world-building needs to be overly complex or drawn out (which is what oftentimes causes me to struggle with fantasy). Overall, I would recommend this book to those interested in this time period (the Spanish Inquisition) or who enjoy light fantasy with smart women at the center.

This was the first historical fantasy book I’ve read, and I loved the setting so much! The magic was so well thought and it was interesting to see how it was perceived by people at the time. The plot was also very exciting.
The only thing is that I really didn’t like the ending. Like I know they were “together” in the end or whatever, but not in the way I would’ve liked.

This is such an interesting story, especially coming from Leigh Bardugo. I loved the setting, and all the world building. This felt really 2010s with the main romance, I won’t say anything more to ruin it. I also liked the sprinkling of LGBTQIA+ in the mix.

Historic Fantasy, Romance Subplots, 1 🔥

This book has a really interesting concept, but I took issue with many of the ways it was crafted.

  1. I found it difficult to connect with any of the characters. None of them particularly won me over or gave me reason to root for them. This was disappointing because you can tell the cast was carefully crafted, but I couldn't quite pin Luiza's personality down except for what's directly told to the reader.
  2. This story reeks of a YA author dipping their toe into the world of adult fiction. The sex scenes were fine, but sometimes crass language was used at points where it weakened the scenes.
  3. Spoilers:
im personally just not the biggest fan of immortal x mortal, especially with how young Luiza was portrayed.
