Difficult listen. Difficult content. Usually if I don’t love a Book Club selection on my own, after the meeting I can at least appreciate it differently. That didn’t happen this time.

🧠 My thoughts
I couldn’t get past 100 pages. The book was really dry, I could say that it read like a non-fiction and even non-fiction isn’t this dry. Maybe I could give it another try another time.

I can appreciate the authors style of writing, but this wasn’t for me.

I enjoyed the story but found it difficult to read. The author is certainly talented and I can understand why it was shortlisted for the booker prize.

I really enjoyed the 2nd part when Ethan went to paint and thought maybe this was the point i would start to enjoy the book.

Ah, Eugenics. How wonderful is it that we can “scientifically” remove inconvenient people from their homes based on their cranial dimensions. This book is based on an incident in Maine in the early 20th century.

Freed slaves tried to establish a safe community following the civil war. They settled on an island and managed to live there for about 50 years before white people nearby decided they might devalue the potential summer cottage industry growing just across the way. Needless to say, any excuse to eradicate them would do.

The characters were surprisingly well developed in such a short book.
