I loved so much about this book, but the first story and the graphic booger descriptions had me gagging! Reynolds knows his audience, and the mix of humor and heart was perfect.
This is a short story collection of Jason Reynolds all based on what kids do after they get out of school. The most of the 10 stories are mostly funny even when there is sadness or worry underneath. The stories cover homophobia, parents with cancer, a grandpa with memory issues, etc., but Reynolds keeps it light with the kids joking and just living their lives. The some teachers and the crosswalk guard appear, but mostly the focus is on these kids. The best part is the narration. Reynolds captures the rhythm, flow and fun of African American Vernacular English. He also does a great job of building distinct characters in each chapter. Kenzi and Simeon were my favorites, but they're all great. An absolutely fun read.
I enjoyed this collection of short stories about students at a school (I imagine it as a middle school/junior high, though I don't know that it was expressly stated), Some of the stories were better than others, but all of the children are dealing with something that you might not know by looking at them. All of the children are well intentioned and perhaps misunderstood. The stories are intertwined in that all the students' attend the same school and encounter some of the others, but they really are separate stories, there is nothing big really tying them together. I would definitely recommend this for middle grade audiences.

So many things left me thinking, which to me is one sign that a book is great. Read a digital copy from the library. Now I need to check out a physical copy and see if there is a map on the book ends. If not, I’ll have to revisit this story and map out how the stories literally intersect.
I always appreciate the realistic style of Jason Reynolds. He can craft a story that is so true and heartfelt that kids and adults of all ages can enjoy. I wasn't sure where this story was going, but I enjoyed the ride of getting to know the kids of these ten blocks. It also reminds me that as an educator, the exterior that kids put out aren't always the whole story (the Low Cuts taking the spare change and coins from wherever they can get it). We all know or have known those kids that put up a front, but there is so much more to it. A walk home that is done every day can seem so simple, but sometimes it's more. Sometimes a bus can fall from the sky.
