This is a classic middle-grade book written by a beloved author of mine, and which I had the pleasure to pick up, for it is the chosen BOTM of the book club I am in.

It starts off with a 10-year old girl from India. Apathetic and impersonable, she lived her life isolated and through a set of customs that of a sahib family.

The very different customs she gets introduced to, matters of manners and independence, tests her character when she moves in her uncle's mansion in Yorkshire, England.

Then, everything changes. She begins to like a few people, she begins to take a liking into gardening, and she begins to transform not only herself, but also another.

Some quotes I took from the book about healing and the beauty of life and nature:

'I shall live for ever and ever and ever!' he cried grandly. 'I shall find out thousands and thousands of things. I shall find out about people and creatures and everything that grows - like Dickon - and I shall never stop making Magic. I'm well! I'm well! I feel - I feel as if I want to shout out something - something thankful, joyful!

Never thee stop believin' in th' Big Good Thing an' knowin' th' world's full of it - an' call it what tha' likes.

To let a sad thought or a bad one gets into your mind is as dangerous as letting a scarlet fever germ get into your body. If you let it stay there after it has got you in you may never get over it as long as you live.

When new, beautiful thoughts began to push out the old, hideous ones, life began to come back to him.

Much more surprising things can happen to anyone, who, when a disagreeable or discouraged thought comes into his mind, just has the sense to remember in time and push it out by putting on an agreeable, determinedly courageous one. Two things cannot be in one place.

Scientific people are always curious, and I am going to be scientific. I keep saying to myself: "What is it? What is it?" It's something.  It can't be nothing! I don't know it's name, so I call it Magic.

Magic is always pushing and drawing and making things out of nothing. Everything is made out of Magic, leaves and trees, flowers and birds, badgers and foxes and squirrels and people. So it must be all around us.

Thanks, Colin. I agree. I am going for a scientific read next.

Truly, it is a book to read if you're seeking the beauty and the Magic in life, if you're healing and want to recover, if you want to fill your mind with a vastly vibrant garden, and if you want to feel the joy of friendship.
