I wanted to like this more than I did.

This author has been on my too read list for a while and I selected this book merely as it came up as one of the few audiobooks I could find initially. I really enjoyed the bard like story telling style and the different take on the Arther story - bringing together what seems like many contradictory tales into one seamless one.

What a lonely story. This story followed one of 3 Gwenhwyfars of Arthurian legend. The beginning of the book was typical of Mercedes Lackey, a warrior training montage but this one lacked passion or interest. One of the biggest missing elements in this story was any supporting characters. She had no friends. In fact the middle of the book spent a very long time driving home how lonely she was. There was no real triumphs for the main character in this book. And the love interest didn't stick. It was only there so it could be taken away so she could end up with nothing in the end for no reason. What I really enjoy about Lackey's books is how the heroine perseveres and overcomes but that was missing from this whole book. It was mostly just sad and lonely. If I hadn't been listening to it on audio book I wouldnt have finished it.

Reading this book further allowed me to enjoy the writing of one of my favorite authors. I can easily get into the worlds she creates and this was no different. Despite it being an Arthurian tale, meaning that as with all Arthurian tales, or most that I have read, end in tragedy for King Arthur (I figure since it's been a few hundred years, that doesn't count as a spoiler...XD).

My review is based on the audio. It is too slow, and the reader sounds like she is drawing each word out.

The notion of three Gueneveres and the notion that this one is raised a warrior . . . all very interesting, but so much more could have been done. The final third of the book -- the bodice ripper, the fling with Lancelin -- was a bitter disappointment. I resorted to skimming.

Probably my least favorite book by a favorite author on a favorite topic. Still written well but it took me two attempts to read with a slow start and lackluster characters and storyline.

Fascinating to see the story from this perspective which I was unfamiliar with.

The first two sections are all about girl power though and the third part throws it all out the window with less than convincing reasoning.

I would have liked more follow up with the magic, gods, etc. I just wanted more from this than was delivered. Overall I was just underwhelmed.

I'm not sure which was worse the book or the narrator and once again I detest character voices *sigh*

Listened to this on audio. Liked the story...HATED the narrator. SO. AWFUL.
