I think this was my favorite of the novellas so far. It was relevant to the main story in that it explains Cassandra’s integration into Muir Woods and gives more context to Nolan, but it wasn’t so important that it felt weird to leave it out of the main story. I liked getting to spend more time with Arden and I’m always happy to see the Luidhag. Great little addition to the main series.

Originally published alongside Once Broken Faith, Dreams and Slumbers are set following the events of that very novel. Only we are shifting perspectives to follow Arden Windermere, the rightful Queen of the Mists.

Arden Windermere may be young for her title, but she is worthy of it nonetheless. She's the Queen the Mists needs, now more than ever. However, that doesn't mean Arden took the job without any doubt.

Or regrets. She had a life before she was thrown into this one. Part of her will always long for that life and for her brother. Naturally, that means she'll leap at the chance to get one of those two back.

I think Dreams and Slumbers is one of the longer October Daye shorts I've read so much. It gave readers plenty of time to appreciate Arden's perspective, as well as the story she was trying to tell here.

Yes, that did make it hurt more in some ways, but in others, it shone so beautifully. Once again, I love seeing this world further fleshed out by seeing it through the eyes of countless different characters. If you love this series, I will urge you to try looking into at least a few of the short stories set in the same world.

Really enjoyed reading this short story again, and I'm interested to see how the Sea Witch will use this favour!

I really enjoyed this short story, being in Arden's head, and her story with her brother, and how this story might affect the future of the series, given what the Sea Witch wanted, and is going to get!

DREAMS AND SLUMBERS is a great addendum to ONCE BROKEN FAITH, best read immediately afterwards. It's nice to see things from a new perspective in the series, and to see how some familiar characters behave when Toby isn't around. Definitely worth reading if you can find it, but I don't think it's crucial if you can't.
