DNF’d halfway through… shouldn’t take me 5 days to read 150 pages….wanted to give this another chance after not being fond of Godkiller, but this story is just not for me.

After loving book 1 and this being the most anticipated release of the year, I can’t say I’m impressed. This is probably the biggest disappointment for me so far this year…

All that made Godkiller great was killed in this book. The fun dynamics and interaction between characters were all gone due to what I call the middle book separation trope where all the MCs from the first book get separated or go on different quests and don’t interact anymore so we only have different POVs in different places. This makes impossible for any relationship (romantic or not) to blossom or evolve which honestly makes it seem as if the first book was pointless. Kissen was the one who gave life and fun to the little group and she was the glue that held it all together. But her being away on a side quests means that all the other characters have little in common and barely interact with each other. That added to about 20 new characters added in book 2 who we have never heard of before and who we quite honestly don’t care about, and it makes for a very bland and confusing plot. The interactions with the different gods were top notch but unfortunately it doesn’t compensate for the lack of dynamics between the rest of the protagonists. From an adventure story, the plot did a 180 and became some long political debate amongst some nobles or commanders we have never heard of before and were being talked at instead of participating in the conversation. It’s pages on pages of random lords, ladies, commandes, captains and veigas talking about sieges, battles, war and who should send what letter of welcome to whom and it’s honestly exhausting and pointless.

This book very much suffered from the middle book syndrome and I’m really hoping that the last book in the trilogy will get back to the way it was in book 1 and doesn’t follow on with this political nonsense. The main issue is that none of the MCs from book 1 have any political agenda and only personal motivations so for all of a sudden the plot to be mainly about this, it doesn’t quite make sense. I’m hoping book 3 will be better now that the MCs are all back in one place…

Ahh why did I start a book series when it isn’t finished? Hannah Kaner, please I beg you, give us the next book!!
Side note I LOVE LOVE LOVE the inclusivity of this novel. It blends so seamlessly in this world. It has everything from disability to gay to trans to (alluded) autism. I wish more writers would be so inclusive. Hats off to you, madam, well done.
