While some elements of the book are dated (gender politics, for instance), the central metaphor about totalitarianism remains compelling.

A deadly snow blankets Buenos Aires. Juan Salvo, his family, and his friends find that they have survived by chance. The layers of the alien invasion uncovered throughout the story are eerie and fascinating. And we never meet the mysterious aliens that have controlled and enslaved the alien species forced to conduct the invasion. A mixture of luck, shared skills among the small group of survivors, and reliance on reason and science allows Juan to survive and eventually escape this dark future.

You could tell this was originally a serial comic - lots of repetition and getting the reader up to speed - which felt odd and made for a slow read in this collection which felt odd in this collection that presented the comic as one long adventure. And parts of it, especially the gender roles, were very dated. But overall the story was interesting and there was a lot to chew on with the ideas and social criticisms woven into the narrative.
