I loved this story. I think I liked it more because I could relate to the main character, Merit, on so many levels. Being married for years, having children and trying to build a career back up afterwards. Losing one’s identity in motherhood is something I don’t think many people talk about. That is what really drew me into this story.
The friendship that started between Merit and Jane was also relatable to me and my best friend. Started out as the boss and turned into a friendship. While the romance part between Merit and Jane seemed quick and could have more development, I still understood it. The “spicy” scenes were not graphic, just implied.
The ending was what you kind of wanted to happen, but definitely took me by surprise as the story played out.

Merit is finally going back to work after having she and Corys two sons. When she interviews with Jane, the two immediately hit it off and Merit gets hired on the spot. As their working relationship grows, Merit begins to feel more for Jane than just friendship…
I have two words to start off this review. Character Driven. Most of you know how I feel about character driven stories (insert my Normal People rant here,) so this one wasn’t my favorite I have read this year. However, it was much better than the above mentioned book. I was still invested in Merit’s love life and the decisions she would make. there just wasn’t much else happening. If you love character driven novels, this one will likely be a great choice!
not sure how i feel about this. very much reminded me how much i don't want kids OR marriage. decent debut novel.

First off, thank you for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! From the description, I had expected it to be really good, and while it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t great. A lot of the story made me uncomfortable, mainly because I felt the romantic aspect of the story did not feel natural. I love LGBT in a book, and will read as many books with representation as I can. However, I felt that the relationship between the two women did not have to develop into a romantic one; I think it would’ve been better if Jane had guided Merit on the way to finding out her true self instead of being the reason she did so. While there were aspects of this book I didn’t like, I did like how this book showed Merit as being able to step away from being a stay at home mother back into work, and how her husband was encouraging her to do so.

I'm actually not sure what I think.
I could not put it down. And I'm thinking about it after it's done.
Life is complicated, love even more so.
Nice ending.

First and foremost thank you to Netgalley for giving me a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved loved loved this book! It wasn't what I was expecting at all but I just couldn't put this book down. The story follows Merit--a mother who is getting back into the work force--and her architect boss Jane over the course of a couple of years.
I read the majority of it in two sittings because Merit and Jane's story kept pulling me in. I loved the pacing of this book, both the slow burn romance aspect but also the gradual progression of Merit learning more about herself.
Anyways, get this book at soon as it comes out it was SO GOOD!
